As an advocate of militant pacifism, Einstein was prepared to fight for a new world order that rejected war as a means for settling disputes among nations. With the world in an economic depression and fascism on the rise, he felt strongly that the forthcoming Geneva Disarmament Conference represented the last chance to prevent another major war. Among his many statements written in anticipation of the Conference, perhaps the most optimistic was the one he wrote for The Nation. Encouraged by the ongoing bilateral talks preceding the opening of the Conference, he saw a ray of hope for this undertaking, but only if the statesmen came to the bargaining table with a firm determination to implement universal disarmament. At the same time, Einstein stressed the need for educational reforms aimed at overcoming deeply engrained traditions that glorified military life.

The version presented here follows the text in The Nation, which differs significantly in wording from that in N & N 1960.
